Mal-Shi Breed Guide & Puppies

Mal-Shi

The Mal-Shi combines the Maltese’s gentle lapdog nature with the Shih Tzu’s sweet, sturdy personality. This popular designer mix is known for being affectionate, people-oriented, and adaptable to many living situations. They thrive on companionship and often prefer to stay close to their owners throughout the day, making them great choices for retirees, families, or first-time dog owners who want a small, loving companion.

Their exercise needs are modest. Short walks, indoor play, and plenty of cuddle time typically meet their activity requirements. Because they are a brachycephalic cross, some Mal-Shis may inherit mild breathing sensitivities from the Shih Tzu side, so intense outdoor exercise or hot weather activity should be limited.

Grooming is more involved. Mal-Shis typically have long, silky coats that require regular brushing and professional grooming every 6–8 weeks to prevent tangles and matting. Consistent care keeps their coats healthy and reduces shedding. They respond well to gentle, positive training methods and enjoy routines that include mental enrichment.

With their friendly disposition, small size, and easygoing temperament, Mal-Shis make wonderful apartment dogs and devoted companions. They do best in homes where they aren’t left alone for long periods and can form close bonds with their people. For anyone seeking a loving, low-to-moderate-energy small breed, the Mal-Shi is a warm and adaptable choice.
