The McNab is a working stock dog developed on California ranches for herding cattle and sheep in tough terrain. Lean, athletic, and intensely focused, they're bred for function over form. These dogs live to work and can be neurotic without daily jobs—they're not pets who happen to herd, they're herding dogs who sometimes pet.
They need 2+ hours daily of hard work—actual ranch work, competitive herding, or serious dog sports. Their short coats are minimal care. Without sufficient outlets, they become destructive, obsessive, and can develop anxiety behaviors. They're sensitive and bond intensely with their handler. For working ranchers, serious herding competitors, or extremely active homes with acreage, McNabs are brilliant partners. For typical suburban families, they're miserable and make everyone around them miserable too.
