The Miniature Australian Cattle Dog is a smaller version of the working ACD, but 'miniature' doesn't mean low-energy. These dogs retain the full intensity, intelligence, and herding drive of their standard-sized counterparts in a 15-35 pound package. They're bred-down cattle dogs, not companion animals.
Daily intense exercise and mental work are non-negotiable—herding lessons, advanced obedience, agility, or treibball prevent destructive outlets for their energy. Their short coats are easy to maintain. They nip heels, herd children and pets, and can become neurotic without jobs. They're incredibly smart but also manipulative and will test boundaries constantly. Not suitable for first-time owners or typical pet homes. For experienced herding breed owners in smaller living spaces or those doing competitive dog sports, they offer ACD capability in a more portable size.
