The Mountain Cur is a working treeing dog from the Appalachian and Ozark mountains, bred to hunt, herd, and guard. Tough, determined, and versatile, they're serious working dogs with strong prey drive and protective instincts. They're not companion animals who happen to hunt—they're hunters who live with you.
Daily intense exercise through hunting, hiking, or running is essential. Their short coats are minimal care. Without sufficient outlets, they become destructive and can develop aggression toward other animals. They're wary of strangers and naturally protective. For hunters, rural homesteaders, or very active owners with land, Mountain Curs are hardworking, loyal partners. For suburban or urban homes, they're inappropriate.
