The Portuguese Podengo is an ancient primitive hunting breed from Portugal that comes in three sizes—Pequeno (small), Médio (medium), and Grande (large). This entry covers the medium and large varieties, which are versatile hunters used for rabbits, wild boar, and other game. Athletic, independent, and alert, they're skilled hunters with strong prey drive and primitive instincts.
They can be smooth or wire-coated, both requiring minimal grooming. Daily vigorous exercise and secure fencing are essential—they're fast, agile, and will chase anything that moves. Training requires patience as they're independent thinkers who work at a distance from handlers. They're affectionate with family but reserved with strangers, retaining more primitive, less domesticated behavior than many breeds. For experienced owners who appreciate ancient hunting breeds and can provide space and activity, the medium and large Podengos are capable, hardy companions.
Note: Only the Pequeno (small) variety is currently AKC-recognized in the United States.
